Herne Bay, named after the village of Herne, which in turn is named after the mythological figure of Herne the Hunter. Herne is not a particularly well-known figure in British mythology, but he would have been familiar to British TV viewers in the early 1980s from his regular appearances in the series "Robin of Sherwood".
